Coastal Cleanup

  • Introduction
    Towards ongoing effort of Government for the "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" in lines with vision of the Hon'ble Prime Minister's appeal for mass cleanliness and sanitation campaign, through "Swachhata Hi Seva" ICG conducted ICC-2023 in all Coastal States / Union Territories on 16 Sep 23. The International Coastal Cleanup day is conducted in various parts of the world on third saturday of September every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) in the South Asian Region. The Indian Coast Guard has been coordinating this activity in India since 2006.
  • Participation
    Indian Coast Guard, as a part of International Coastal Cleanup Day conducted focused activities contributing towards 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'. The event was conducted within an aim to educate and to motivate the local populace for maintaining the sea shores neat and clean and to avoid further pollution of marine environment by man-made activities. This year, CG RHQ(W) has witnessed the highest participation of 11,425 volunteers followed by CG RHQ(E) which had 5,166 volunteers. Nationwide, a total of 25,245 volunteers participated in the ICC-2023 campaign. As a part of contributing towards 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' ICG units participated in cleaning of marine litters from coastal waters.
  • Debris Collection
    The campaign resulted in the collection of 24,354 kgs (approx) of Marine litter and 15,008 kgs of Plastic litter. Marine litter collection was highest in Western Region with approx 10,296 Kgs.
  • Civil support
    Apart from Ministries and other Armed Forces, ICC - 2023 received good support from various civil authorities, Municipal Corporations, NGO, fisheries associations, School students, College students, NCC/NSS cadets, Marine Police, Oil Handling Agencies (OHAs) volunteers.

  • Introduction
    Taking forward, the vision of the Hon'ble Prime Minister's and his constant emphasis on cleanliness across the nation including Coastal States/UTs, a cleanliness campaign "Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar" and 'Puneet Sagar Abhiyan' was conducted on 17 Sep 2022. This year's International Coastal Cleanup day also coincides with the celebrations of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' in 75th year of independence. The coastal cleanup drive was conducted at 75 Beaches across the country with 75 volunteers for every kilometer of the coastline. The ICC is conducted in various parts of the world in third week of September every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Progremme (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) in the South Asian Region. The Indian Coast Guard has been coordinating this activity in India since 2006.
  • The campaign was integrated with Ministry of Earth Science (MoES), Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Indian Coast Guard(ICG), National Service Scheme (NSS), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Seema Jagran Manch, Akhil Bharatiya Vidarthi Parishad (ABVP), Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gativiidhi (PSG) alongwith other social organisation and educational institutions. The event was conducted with an aim to maintain the sea shores neat and clean and to avoid further pollution of marine environment by man-made activities and also educate and motivate the local populace.
  • Participation
    This year, Western Region has witnessed the highest participation of 42,342 volunteers. Nationwide, 81,178 volunteers participated in the ICC - 2022 campaign. As a part of contributing towards 'Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar' ICG ships participated in cleaning of marine litters from coastal waters.
  • Debris Collection
    The campaign resulted in the collection of 56,974 kgs (approx) of Marine litter and 25,561 kgs of Plastic litter. Debris is collection was highest in Western Region with approx 25,103 Kgs.
  • Civil support
    Apart from Ministries and other Armed Forces, ICC - 2022 received good support from various civil authorities, Municipal Corporations, NGO, fisheries associations, School students, College students, NCC cadets, IOC, Marine Police, Oil Handling Agencies (OHAs) and other organisations including Primary Health Centre (PHC) for participating in the event.

The International Coastal Cleanup day is conducted in various parts of the world in third week of September every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) in the South Asian Region. The Indian Coast Guard has been coordinating this activity in India since 2006.
  • Participation
    Indian Coast Guard, as a part of International Coastal Cleanup Day conducted focused activities contributing towards "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan". Nationwide, a total of 7,184 volunteers participated in the ICC-2021 campaign. As a part of contributing towards 'Swachh Sagar Abhiyan' ICG ships participated in cleaning of marine litters from coastal waters.
  • Debris Collection
    The campaign resulted in the collection of 38,008 Kgs (approx) of marine litter. Debris collection was highest at Maharashtra with approx 12,814 Kgs and Tamil Nadu was approx 9,686 Kgs.
  • Civil support
    Apart from other armed forces, ICC-2021 received good support from various civil authorities, Municipal Corporations, NGO, fisheries associations, School students, College students, NCC cadets, IOC Marine Police, Oil handling agencies volunteers including Primary Health Centre (PHM) participated in the event.

The International Coastal Cleanup day is conducted in various parts of the world in third week of September every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) in the South Asian Region. The Indian Coast Guard has been coordinating this activity in India since 2006.
  • Participation
    This year, Maharashtra has witnessed the highest participation of 2,970 volunteers followed by Tamil Nadu which had 2,393 volunteers. Nationwide, a total of 19,479 volunteers participated in the ICC-2019 campaign. Various Govt. and civil agencies including NCC cadets, NSS, school and college students formed the largest proportion of volunteers alongwith ICG personnel.
  • Debris Collection
    The campaign resulted in the collection of 75,224 kgs (approx) of marine litter. Debris collection was highest at Puducherry UT, at approx 28,200 kgs.
  • Civil support
    Apart from other armed forces, ICC-2019 received good support from various civil authorities, Central and State government organizations, Municipal Corporations, NGOs, fisheries associations, ports, oil agencies and other private enterprises. Chief Guests for ICC-2019 included Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of Andhra University, Executive Director KSSPL, Regional Director (South) India Tourism while District Collectors were also present in the programme.

The International Coastal Cleanup day is conducted in various parts of the world in third week of September every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) in the South Asian Region. The Indian Coast Guard has been coordinating this activity in India since 2006. A brief on the conduct of the event is appended in the succeeding paragraphs
  • Participation
    This year Maharashtra State has witnessed the highest participation of 4,697 volunteers followed by Gujarat State which had 2,621 volunteers. Nationwide, a total of 22,026 volunteers participated in the ICC-2018 campaign. Various Govt. and civil agencies including NCC cadets, NSS, school and college students formed the largest proportion of volunteers alongwith CG personnel.
  • Debris Collection
    The nationwide campaign resulted in the collection of 71,220 Kgs of marine litter. Debris collection was highest at Maharashtra State, approx 16,900 kgs and Gujarat State was approx 11,437 kgs.
  • Civil support
    Apart from other armed forces, ICC-2018 received good support from the various civil authorities, Central and State government organisations, Municipal Corporations, NGOs, fisheries associations, ports, oil agencies and other private enterprises. Chief Guests for ICC-2018 included Hon'ble Chief Minister, Collector, Commissioner of Customs, Deputy Collector and DIG of Police in smaller locations.

Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi along with volunteers undertook Yamuna Cleanup drive at Geeta Ghat, Delhi to commemorate "Swachhta Hi Seva" on 16 Sep 17. The International Coastal Cleanup day is conducted in various parts of the world in third week of September every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) in the South Asian Region. Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is celebrating its 40th raising day in 2017. As part of its awareness programme towards Marine Environment, ICG undertook a special Coastal Cleanup Programme across all nine Coastal States and four Union Territories on 04 Feb 17.

Coast Guard being the Central Coordinating Authority for marine pollution undertakes such drives to generate awareness amongst the masses. ICG has been regularly conducting coastal cleanup from time to time since its inception. The State Administration, college/ school children and various volunteer organizations have been supporting Indian Coast Guard in this noble drive over the years

Further, ICG has been appealing from time to time, to all the stakeholders of marine environment especially ports and oil handling/ exploration agencies to also undertake cleanup in their area of operations so as to preserve the marine environment.

During the special drive on 04 Feb 17, an overwhelming support was provided to the Indian Coast Guard by the State Administration, Ports, Oil Handling Agencies, College/ School children in all the Coastal States and Union Territories

Further, Indian Coast Guard has also been coordinating International coastal Cleanup day in India, which is conducted in various parts of the worlds in Sep every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and under the aegis of South Asian Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) in South Asian Region. During the last International Coastal cleanup programme in Sep 2016, Indian Coast Guard launched 'Swachh Sagar Abhiyan' taking the Govt. of India drive of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' to Maritime Zone of India.

A total of 5,167 personnel participated in the drive and collected 21,350 kgs marine litter.
