Artificial Breeding Research Center

Artificial Breeding Research Centre, ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal maintaining breeding bulls consisting of Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Karan Fries and Karan Swiss breeds of cattle and Murrah breed of buffalo. ABRC is involved in production, processing, preservation and utilization of quality semen from cattle and buffalo bulls of high genetic merit.

The Artificial Breeding Research Center is playing a proactive role in achieving the following mandate:

  • Research on genetic improvement of dairy cattle and buffaloes, reproduction management of male animals/ breeding bulls and frozen semen technology.
  • Teaching of post-graduate students, training and consultancy on male reproduction.
  • Conservation and dissemination of superior male germplasm of cattle and buffaloes.
  • To generate revenue for the Institute.

The laboratory is imparting training in the field of artificial insemination, PD and semen processing technology to the participants from India and abroad.

Training courses in the following area are given in the laboratory: –

  • Training in Artificial Insemination and allied aspects for lay inseminators.
  • Training in A.I. for field level personnel.
  • Training in frozen semen technology for Veterinary officers / Semen Bank officers.
  • Training in utilization of frozen semen for Veterinary officers and field officers.
  • Reorientation course in A.I.and semen processing.

Regular teaching courses in the area of Reproduction and Artificial Insemination are imparted to postgraduate students of Dairy Science College.

The Research centre is responsible for artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis, reproductive health and maintaining reproductive efficiency of the NDRI herd consisting of Cattle and buffalo.

Consultancy is provided to various public and private agencies in the area of frozen semen technology / use of frozen semen /setting of semen bank and inputs required / availability of various equipment, liquid nitrogen etc. Advisory service to the farmers in use of A.I., choice of bull and other aspects is a regular feature.

The lab has been identified by Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, as one of the centers for testing indigenously manufactured A.I. equipment. Liquid nitrogen containers of different makes, semen freezing accessories, single dose semen packaging, insemination devices etc., are tested and necessary recommendations for improvements also given where necessary.

Bulls are kept in concrete floored individual pens with corrugated asbestos roofed sheds with the orientation of east-west direction through its long axis. Daily cleaning of manger and water trough is done. Left over feed is removed from manger daily to prevent mould growth and refusal of fresh feed. Vaccination, deworming and other herd-health programme is followed as per the farm schedule, to ensure good health. The bulls are vaccinated against FMD, HS & BQ, checked for communicable diseases and are managed to produce quality semen. Bulls are exercised once a week, the day before semen collection in the rotatory exerciser, soas to maintain the libido of bulls and ensure quality semen production. Bulls are kept in individual pens with adequate loafing area separated by solid partitions that restrict both direct physical and visual contact of bulls in adjacent pens, with a sufficient long rope to ensure its almost free movements within the shed. During summer (hot-humid) sprinkling along with fan gives them relief from heat stress. Hygienic measures is the priority to maintain cleanliness within and surrounding the bull farm

  • Filtration and Vitamin E Fortification of low grade ejaculate for Liquid semen use at Refrigerated Temperature (4-7oC).
  • Effect of antioxidant preservative on cold protection ability of low grade Riverine buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) bull spermatozoa.
  • Soy milk based extender developed for semen preservation with equivalent semen preservability.
  • Sephadex filtration of low grade ejaculate was standardized for preservation.
  • Post vaccination (FMD, HS and BQ) semen quality and semen quality parameters in Karan Fries, Sahiwal and Murrah buffalo bulls was evaluated and methods for amelioration of vaccination stress for better semen production was developed.
  • Preventive measures to improve sub fertility of breeding bulls were developed.
  • Effect of cryopreservation on sperm chromatin integrity and fertilizing potential in bovine-semen was standardised.
  • Exploration of Y-chromosome specific markers to discover SNP associated with sub fertility traits in dairy bulls was found

Frozen semen of Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Karan Fries, Karan Swiss and Murrah buffalo is available @ Rs. 20/- per straw (0.25ml French Mini Straws). The rate of the frozen semen straw of progeny tested bulls depends on the breeding value of the bulls.

A limited number of doses of frozen semen (0.25ml French Mini Straws) are available for sale from the list of bulls attached herewith. The frozen semen will be supplied on first come first serve basis. Supplies will be made from ARTIFICIAL BREEDING RESEARCH CENTRE of ICAR-NATIONAL DAIRY RESEARCH INSTITUTE, KARNAL (Haryana) on payment. The prices are inclusive of all taxes.

The purchaser is required to bring enough liquid nitrogen for his requirement. A limited amount of liquid nitrogen could be made available @Rs.20/- per liter in case of emergent requirement.

The number of doses available and date of lifting frozen semen will be intimated for taking delivery. The cost of the semen is to be deposited either in cash or in the shape of demand draft payable to "ICAR UNIT, NDRI, KARNAL" drawn on State Bank of Patiala, NDRI Karnal or by other bank at Karnal. No credit sales are permitted.

It may be ensured that the person deputed for taking delivery is able to assess the quality of frozen semen. Frozen semen is delivered only after the purchaser is satisfied about the quality and there is no subsequent complaint regarding the quality of semen.
